Hi! I am Daniel Ungureanu — a passionate GIS engineer and Python developer with a background in forest ecology and nature conservation. I bring hands-on experience working at the intersection of programming, ecology, biodiversity monitoring and geospatial technology, driven by a deep interest in understanding and protecting forest ecosystems. My skill set includes Python, Django, QGIS, SQL, Pandas, Linux (Ubuntu Server), and web development. I manage GIS databases and networks, build web applications and enjoy developing tools to automate tasks. I’m particularly passionate about biodiversity conservation, climate-change and wildfires. With multicultural experience abroad and a systems-thinking mindset, I aim to contribute meaningfully to awesome projects, at the intersection of technology and ecology. Besides the knowledge in forest management, I built first skills in GIS, applied statistics, scientific research, being part of two scientific student groups (entomology and silviculture). Bachelor thesis: Investigations on bark beetles and other bark pests on coniferous trees in the forest district of Râșnov R.A., Brașov, Romania – Three-year field study (2007–2009) with seven pheromone lures and temperature sensors across four bark beetle species, including lab work and statistical analyses (t-tests, ANOVA, post-hoc tests) to evaluate pheromone effectiveness and optimize forest monitoring.
During my Master thesis, I deepened my expertise in forest management, forest ecology, and GIS. I conducted fieldwork across a 4,116 ha forest area, establishing approximately 84 sample plots. Using QuantumGIS (QGIS) for spatial analysis and cartography, and a Nautiz 7 rugged field device for data collection, I measured biometric parameters of several tree species to assess their relationship with environmental site factors.
A 6 months Python programming language course which introduced me into the world of programming and web development, at a local school in Brasov, Romania.
A three weeks exchange program in Greece, Halkidiki area, where we practiced cluster analysis on site index and flora datasets.
Six-month exchange program with a focus on International Forestry. I attended lectures on global forest management practices and gained insight into different forestry systems worldwide. The program was complemented by German language courses.
Three-month research stay in an entomology lab. I worked on various research tasks and gained practical experience in R programming for statistical analysis and data processing. The work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. i. R. Dr. Stefan Vidal.
Three weeks exchange program in Western Canada, consisting of a field trip throughout Coast Mountains and Rocky Mountains, starting from Edmonton and finishing it in Vancouver. We were taken through all aspects of field work in forestry and national parks, from logging and monitoring insect breakouts to managing forest fires, wildlife and protected areas in Canada (Banff and Jasper National Parks, Grove Cathedral in Vancouver Island).
I started as a Deputy Forest Engineer, where my responsibilities included forest surveying and GIS data collection using QGIS and GPS devices. I was later promoted to Technical Director, taking charge of operational forest planning, leading a team of 10 staff, and integrating GIS-based workflows into routine forestry operations.
I coordinated field activities and forest inventories as part of the LIFE+ project LIFE11/NAT/RO/823 – "Ecological reconstruction of forest and aquatic habitats in the upper Dâmbovița Valley, Făgăraș Mountains". My work focused on GIS-based data collection and analysis, using QGIS and ArcGIS 10.2 for mapping, digital field workflows, and data integration. I also produced regular progress reports and contributed to the planning of management measures. The project involved the restoration of forest and aquatic habitats, reforestation of clear-cut areas, and the conversion of spruce monocultures into more resilient mixed forests.
This is a food industry start-up that I co-founded. I created the website and maintained it for several years, created a voucher management software in Python and Tkinter, also managed google ads and advertising, business development and various administrative tasks.
I design and develop full-stack web applications using Python/Django, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. I manage server infrastructure on Linux, deploy applications using Docker, and work with AWS for cloud-based hosting and services. For backend performance, I implement asynchronous task processing with Asyncio, while frontend interfaces are built using jQuery and Bootstrap for responsive, user-friendly design.
Examples:
I manage PostGIS/PostgreSQL databases and built a digital field data collection system using QField, cloud services, and QGIS forms. I developed a custom website with a remote MySQL database, online payment system, and CMS for staff, a timesheet and reporting web app for employees, and automated many smaller scale processes to ease bureaucracy (e.g. GPS-based vehicle report generation, Excel data processing, QR code generators, and an intranet ticket machine interface with remote SQL database connectivity). I also integrated a JavaScript-based GIS map as a standalone web app. I manage social media presence (YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram) and create custom graphics for the website and social media.
